John Englebert Schwartze (also known as as E. Schwartze) appears to be a friend of the Chapin family, or at least a friend of Lucinda Chapin. He only authored one letter in this collection, which was written during his time as a Union soldier amid the Civil War. The letter notably reveals a level of familiarity with the Chapin family to willingly include a gift for the youngest daughter, Maggie.

Schwartze was part of the 2nd regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Cavalry in companies I and C. He was ranked as a corporal upon discharge. [confirmed here] Schwartze's letter also provides insight into the extensive fortifications built by the Union army to protect Paducah circa 1861. He described the placement of several thirty-two and sixty-four pound cannons on the outskirts of town and along the river, and claimed it would be very difficult for enemy forces to get past them.

Schwartze married Sarah C. Burnett on March 10, 1867 in Champaign, Illinois. Few concrete details are known of his wherabouts until his death in June 1917.
