Shih-Liang Chien
Shih-liang Chien (钱思亮) graduated from Tsing-hua University in 1931. At UIUC, he earned his Master's and Ph.D. in chemistry (1932, 1934).
Dr. Chien returned to Mainland China and worked at Beijing University as professor and administrator. In 1949 he joined Taiwan University and became Director/Head of the chemistry department. 1951 he became the President of the Taiwan University and served for 19 years.
In 1970 he was appointed President of the Taiwan Science Academy. UIUC awarded him an Honorary Doctoral Degree in 1983. Sadly, shortly after receiving this degree, he fell ill and never recovered.
He passed away on September 15th, 1983.
